Introduction to artistes performing at Naada Lahari 2009

Ragavan Manian
Ragavan Manian is a disciple of the renowned Carnatic musician, composer and multi-faceted genius, "Padma Vibhushan" Dr. Balamurali Krishna. Ragavan strives continually to imbibe his illustruous Guru's philosophy of music. He began his vocal training at the age of seven under "Pallavi" T. Narasimhachari with whom he eventually learned the art of singing Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi. He also received precious guidance from his aunt Tenkasi P. Rajammal in music composition and improvisation. Ragavan started giving public performances at the age of 10 and has sung extensively in Chennai and won several competitions in various aspects of Carnatic music. He received good press on concert technique and Pallavi singing .Since coming to the USA in 1996, Ragavan has performed in many cities and festivals, including the Cleveland Tyagaraja Aradhana and South India Fine Arts. Now based in the Bay Area, Ragavan performs in a variety of forums across the country, covering a wide cross-section of themes. He was one of the founding members of "Thillana", a Bay Area light music group that has raised money for various charity organizations. He is a skilled instrumentalist, and enjoys playing the flute, violin, saxophone, clarinet, guitar, mohrsing and ganjira. In his spare time he pens lyrics and composes original scores. Ragavan works in a high tech firm in the Valley. He is an IIT Madras alumnus.

Shubhangi Sakhalkar
Shubhangi Sakhalkar brings a brilliant pedigree to her music. After her early tutelage with Smt. Kunda Vaishampayan, she spent several years learning from the renowned artistes Dr. Prabha Atre and Smt. Padma Talwalkar. In addition, Shubhangi has brought her own ardent riyaaz, creative imagination, and keen intellect to bear upon her art. She has performed in several musical circles in cities in India including Mumbai and Pune. In the US, Shubhangi has captivated music aficionados with numerous charismatic concerts from coast to coast. She has performed in Atlanta, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Phoenix, San Jose, and Los Angeles. Some of her more prestigious concerts include a SPICMACAY concert at U.C. Davis, a concert hosted by Lata Mangeshkar Foundation U.S.A. where she was accompanied by Ustad Tari Khan, and Basant Bahar's first annual music festival where she was accompanied by Pt. Swapan Chowdhari and Pt. Ramesh Mishra. Her energetic yet melodious singing has met with enthusiastic appreciation and has created many fans in several U.S. cities. A gold medallist with an M.A. degree in Hindustani classical music, Shubhangi believes in sharing her knowledge and raising awareness about Indian Classical music.

Vivek Datar
He learnt harmonium from (late) Pt Vinayakrao Kale. He has been accompanying for last 20 years. He is also interested in harmonium construction and tuning.

Ravi Gutala
Ravi Gutala is originally from Hyderabad, India and has been initiated at a very early age into Tabla by Shri P.Anjaiah, a senior staff artiste at AIR, Hyderabad, India. Currently he resides in San Jose, California and has been studying Tabla under Maestro Swapan Chaudhuri at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, CA for the past 16 years. He also has been teaching Tabla to a number of aspiring students in the Bay Area. Ravi has won numerous awards and is a recipient of All India National Talent Search Scholarship. He had been a regular performer at AIR, Hyderabad, India between 1982-1986. He has accompanied many noted artistes such as, Pt.Jasraj, Smt. Lakshmi Shankar, Prof TVG, Dr.Rajeev Taranath, Pt.Vijay Shankar, Smt Veena Sahasrabuddhe, Dr.L.Subramaniam, Pt.Buddhadev Das Gupta, Pt.Budhaditya Mukherjee, Ustad Shujaat Khan, Master Shashank, Gingger etc. Ravi has 7 CD recordings and 2 cassette recordings to his credit. Ravi designs semiconductor chips for a living.

Lakshmi Balasubramanya
With more than 800 concerts to her credit, Lakshmi has received guidance from Prof. H.V. Krishnamurthy, Vid. S.V.Narayan and Vid. H.K. Venkataram . A young artiste of very high potential, she has performed and accompanied numerous artists all over the country including Vid. TV Gopalakrishnan, Vid RK Srikanthan, Vid. Seetalakshmi Venkatesan, Vid RA Ramamani and others. She has received awards and honors including Ananya Pratibhe Award, the Prathibakankshi awards. She received "Best Violinist" award from Ananya Cultural Academ, Malleshwaram Sangeeta SabhaGayana Samaja, Nadajyoti Sangeeta Sabha Karnataka Gana Kala Parishat and many others. She has a rare distinction of obtaining the 1 rank in Junior, Senior and Vidwat Music Exams. She is also a A B-High grade artist of All India Radio.

Karthik Gopalratnam
Karthik started learning the art of playing the Mridangam from a very young age, in Bangalore, India, from renowned Guru Vidwan Sri H.S.Sudhindra, a respected teacher and prominent artiste in Bangalore. Karthik has also learnt vocal Carnatic music from his mother Smt. Girija Gopalratnam, and Vidushi Smt. Neela Ramagopal of Bangalore. Karthik has given numerous Mridangam performances in Bangalore and the Bay Area, as well as in Seattle, where he was privileged to come under the guidance of Vidushi Smt. Sreevidhya Chandramouli, a renowned Veena artiste and descendant of the illustrious Karaikudi Veenai tradition. Vidushi Sreevidhya's artistic and aesthetic guidance have been instrumental in moulding Karthik's growth as a musician - both as a Mridangist as well as a vocalist.
